Rainy days in Georgia can bring flooding and floods of unwanted pests. Most bugs don’t usually like to get wet but some pests love wet weather. This time of year is also a time of extreme temperature fluctuations in our state, one day can be the high 70s and the next days can approach freezing, causing insects to either come out of hiding or look for shelter for a variety of reasons.
Protect Your Home
When rain fills pests’ homes (often large holes and tunnels in the ground) they are motivated to find a new shelter—like your home! Make your home as uninviting as possible by taking these proactive measures:
- Eliminate sources of standing water.
- Trim shrubbery and trees away from your home.
- Clean gutters regularly.
- Seal entry points (cracks, crevices, weep holes, screens, and more) with the correct caulks and sealants Do not use copper mesh to seal weep holes since it will rust and be sure to use an all weather sealant to prevent contraction and expansion that will lead to future problems.
- Thin out mulch or pine straw around your home’s perimeter and turn it over frequently with a rake to dry it out.
